Life at the Lake

SEPTEMBER 2026 – A brand new academic year is underway! This one went from 0-60 extremely fast, but I’m handling the curves well as we race forward. Excitement surrounds the change of seasons and this time of year provides some of the best weather in New England and one must embrace it. For me it also spurs on fresh ideas and promise of new projects and energy. And I intend to not let that momentum slip through my fingers.

I’ve been exploring a lot of new architect’s work and considering some new materials for house designs which has been really cool. I saw this interesting infographic the other day with the housing styles that defined each era in the US. And every few decades a different style takes hold and shapes the landscape and neighborhoods around us. I haven’t necessarily been that drawn to what has been the contemporary offerings, as I tend to find historic homes and more experimental builds more compelling.

The new design project I’m working on is definitely in alignment with that sentiment and carries on the organic architecture strand I have been fostering for the last few years. The main difference is the choice of material and designing in a less constrained manner. Less practical, less economical, more whimsical, more imaginative.

Spent time up in Maine with friends at a cool lake house. Hard to top life on the water. Being that far North and away from the city lights you could see the stars so clearly as it was remarkably pitch black at night. I so much better understand now the need to escape the every day and have these moments as they are foundational for interrupting the procession of time.

To make memories to have those nights by the fire and to spend time on something other than work. I have a tendency to lock-in on whatever my goal is and need a reminder that there is life outside of straight line pursuits. So thank you to September and my friends for the reminder!
